On December 6, 2024, students from the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering (Electronics) - BHE program under the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology (FTKEE) embarked on an academic visit to Telekom Malaysia's Submarine Cable Station (SDKL) in Cherating. The visit was led by Dr. Nor Hadzfizah Binti Mohd Radi, accompanied by Dr. Nur Zahirah Binti Mohd Ali and Dr. Syamimi Mardiah Binti Shaharum, with the main objective of gaining insights into the technology and communication systems underpinning submarine cables, which form the backbone of global internet connectivity.

The session began with a briefing by Mr. Wan Zulkifli Bin Wan Idris, a communication officer at the station, who provided an in-depth explanation of the functions and importance of submarine cable systems that connect various nations worldwide. He highlighted the pivotal role these systems play in maintaining seamless internet connectivity and their contributions to the global telecommunications infrastructure.

Students were introduced to the advanced technologies used in installing, maintaining, and monitoring these submarine cables. They also learned about the methods for detecting and swiftly repairing cable damage caused by natural factors or human activities. Additionally, the group toured the station's facilities, observing state-of-the-art equipment such as real-time monitoring systems for cable conditions and testing tools designed to ensure optimal data transmission quality.

The visit included an interactive Q&A session where students engaged with Mr. Wan Zulkifli, delving into challenges faced in managing submarine cable systems, including maintenance costs and emerging technologies aimed at enhancing efficiency.

This visit served as a valuable learning experience for the students, providing practical exposure and a deeper understanding of the critical technologies driving global telecommunication networks. It highlighted the importance of technical precision and maintenance in ensuring reliable and uninterrupted internet services. Moreover, it inspired students to explore career opportunities and innovative research within the field of telecommunications.

The visit also reinforced the relevance of submarine cable systems in the context of evolving global connectivity demands. By observing real-world applications and engaging with industry experts, the students gained insights that complement their academic knowledge in electrical and electronics engineering.

A special thanks goes to Mr. Wan Zulkifli Bin Wan Idris and Telekom Malaysia for their informative briefing and generous hospitality. The experience not only enriched the students' educational journey but also offered inspiration for future endeavors in the telecommunications sector. It is hoped that the knowledge acquired during this visit will prove beneficial in their studies and professional careers ahead.

Technical Workshop Series: Programming Using Arduino for Senior Design Project I (SDP1) and Final Thesis & Technical Paper Writing for Senior Design Project II (SDP2)

On June 6, 2024, FTKEE UMPSA organized a series of technical workshops tailored for students undertaking Senior Design Project I (SDP1) and Senior Design Project II (SDP2). The SDP1 workshop, held at the STEM Laboratory, provided students with hands-on exposure to proper Arduino programming techniques. The goal was to ensure that students could develop their project Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) effectively, minimizing errors during fabrication processes. This session emphasized maintaining high-quality project development that meets the standards of Bachelor of Engineering Technology education.

Meanwhile, the SDP2 workshop, conducted in the Ibnu Sina Meeting Room, focused on equipping students with the skills to write their Final Thesis and Technical Papers. The session detailed proper formatting and adherence to established guidelines to ensure that student submissions met high academic and professional standards. The workshop aimed to align the quality of written outputs with the rigorous expectations of a Bachelor’s-level engineering technology program.

These workshops reflect FTKEE's commitment to enhancing students’ technical proficiency and academic writing capabilities, paving the way for excellence in both project implementation and scholarly documentation.
