The Role of Engineers in Society: Knowledge Sharing through Industry Talk by PETRONAS
An Industry Talk session was held on April 11, 2025, at the Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology (FTKEE), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), Pekan Campus. The program was specially organized for students of the BTE2562 Engineer in Society course, under the guidance of Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Ahmad Nor Kasruddin bin Nasir. The main objective of this session was to provide students with deeper exposure to the roles engineers play in society and to help them understand the challenges faced in the real-world industry.
The talk, titled "Engineers and Their Role in Society," was delivered by Ir. Ts. Wan Umikalthum binti Wan Mohd Nowalid, Head of the Electrical Division / Lead Engineer (Protection and Control) at PETRONAS. During her presentation, she emphasized that an engineer’s responsibilities go beyond technical aspects—they also include social responsibilities, leadership roles, and adherence to high ethical standards in engineering. Values such as integrity, accountability, and professionalism were highlighted as essential pillars for success in an engineering career.
In addition to discussing the core values and principles of the engineering profession, she also shared her personal experiences working in the energy sector with PETRONAS. These insights gave students a realistic and comprehensive view of the actual industrial landscape.
Overall, the session had a very positive impact on the students, strengthening their understanding of an engineer’s responsibilities towards society and the environment. The faculty extends its heartfelt appreciation to Ir. Ts. Wan Umikalthum for her insightful and inspiring knowledge sharing session.
