From Ideas to Underwater Robots: Inspiring STEM Interest from The School Years

From Ideas to Underwater Robots: Inspiring STEM Interest from The School Years

23 June 2026 | SK Chengal Lempong, Balok, Kuantan

Not just observing a robot, but building, assembling and testing one themselves.

The Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology (FTKEE), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), conducted a CSR Workshop on Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Underwater Robot Construction with the local school community in Balok, Kuantan.

The programme, involving 40 pupils from six schools, provided participants with an opportunity to explore the world of engineering and robotics through hands-on learning experiences.

Throughout the workshop, the pupils were introduced to the process of building an ROV, starting from designing the ROV, constructing the frame, developing the thruster and control circuits, assembling the components, and testing the completed ROV.

More importantly, participants did not learn through theory alone. They had the opportunity to understand how components such as the thruster, control circuit and ROV structure are integrated to create a robot that can be operated underwater.

This initiative is in line with FTKEE’s efforts to foster interaction and knowledge sharing between the university community and school communities, while providing pupils with early exposure to engineering, robotics, underwater technology and STEM.

From pipes and electronic components to a fully functioning underwater robot, this is STEM in a form that can be touched, built and tested.

May this experience inspire more young people to dare to experiment, create and explore the world of technology and engineering in the future.
